This introductory course on the Tabla imparts skills in rhythm and Tabla. Students can start at the basic level or at the intermediate level, depending on their existing proficiency in the field (to be determined at the time of admission)

Presented in a simple and accessible manner, the course will cover fundamental concepts and principles of Tabla – for both entry level students, as well as students seeking a higher level of training 

Throughout this comprehensive course (usually lasting 2 years), students will receive detailed instruction, guided practice, and ample opportunities for hands-on learning. By the end of the course, students will have acquired a thorough understanding of tabla techniques, history, and performance, enabling them to confidently engage with this captivating instrument in the realm of Indian classical music.

Content: Basic level (Foundations and Techniques, typically Year 1): Introduction and Basic Techniques - Discover the history and birth of the tabla, tracing its origins and significance in Indian classical music - Explore the concept of ‘Gharana,’ understanding the lineage and distinctive styles of tabla playing - Dive into the world of ‘Bol,’ learning the essential syllables that form the rhythmic language of the tabla - Develop correct hand positioning and posture for playing the tabla - Basic Bol and Correct Usage - Study the fundamental ‘Bol’ of the tabla, including ‘Dha,’ ‘Dhin,’ ‘Na,’ ‘Tin,’ and more - Learn the correct pronunciation and usage of each ‘Bol’ - Practice and execute basic ‘Bol’ combinations to build rhythmic patterns - Introduction to Tabla Solo - Gain insight into the concept of ‘Tabla Solo,’ its structure, and significance - Begin building foundational skills required for executing solo performances Intermediate Level: (Advanced Techniques and Performance – typically Year 2) Solo Tabla and Tabla Sangat (Accompaniment to Songs) - Delve deeper into solo tabla playing, focusing on intricate compositions and improvisation - Learn the art of accompaniment (‘Sangat’), blending rhythm with melody to create captivating performances - Varieties of Bandishes in Tabla - Explore different types of ‘Bandishes’ used in tabla playing, including ‘Rela,’ ‘Tihai,’ and ‘Chakradhar’ - Develop proficiency in playing these compositions with precision and flair - Advanced Tabla Solo - Progress to more intricate solo tabla performances, incorporating advanced techniques and improvisation - Gain a deep understanding of rhythm, dynamics, and artistic expression in solo tabla playing
